Educational Videos

Here are a many educational videos I've done for various purposes.

These are videos about brass-wind acoustics and brass-wind methods some of you might find useful.

There are  over 25 videos here on advanced embouchure technique and trumpet physics. Each video covers different facets. To get the complete picture, you'll need to watch them all.

Setting Up An Altissimo Embouchure

This is ONE way to do this sort of thing.

This is a technique I developed on my own to play the upper register.

Tongue Position for Playing Trumpet

This is how I position my tongue for playing trumpet and extended range.

I have often been asked if this is TCE. It isn't quite. It is approaching TCE and is more  hybrid technique.

On Breathing For Trumpet

How your air works in playing trumpet.

This is a video clip on how I think of breathing for playing trumpet.

Flexibility and Trills

This is a partial discussion about lips flexibilities.

This is a short discussion about how I do lip flexibilities. I have more detailed videos on this subject.

Long Tones Sotto Voce

The merits of soft practicing.

This is a primer about my thinking about soft practice. I have more detailed videos on this subject.

Different Sets on Ring Visualizer

Setting up altissimo embouchure from a different perspective.

This short clip shows the different sets I use on a ring visualizer.

Different Sets In Action

Here are several sets showing the two different embouchures in use.

In each excerpt, whenever I switch sets, I indicate the switch with a text caption.

More on Tongue and Flexibility

This is the video from my iBook on this subject.

Compare the discussion here with the one above.

Dunlap Singing Exercise

This is the video from my iBook on this subject.

I have several clips here outlining how I use these exercises.

Hi Gear Lo Gear

AKA regular set altissimo set

I use two different sets when I play, thus achieving terrific endurance. This is an initial discussion of what I do. I have more detailed videos on this.

Hi Gear FAQ

More on hi gear set

Tis is more on the hi gear set I use. Frankly, this clip is probab more about just horsing around with high notes, but if you WATCH what I do, you can pick up some ideas.

Singing Exercise from Low Ab to F over DHC

This is the exercise I use to work on maintaining my range.

I no longer do this exercise every day. I practice around 5 hours per day, and what I cover varies, depending on what I need to work on. Frankly, any of my practice supports my upper register, even if I don't play out of the staff. More on this later.

Jazz Patterns Demo

These are some of the patterns I use to work on my jazz.

These are some specific patterns that can be generalized to almost any scale, chord or mode. I first learned these from Joe Daley and that worked with them with his protege, Rich Corpolongo, both of whom were my jazz instructors.

Wedge Mouthpiece Demos

I use a variety of mouthpieces in my work, and this video compares and contrasts them all.

While I can cover essentially the full range of the horn on any mouthpiece, I use different mouthpieces for different jobs. I do not subscribe to the idea that one mouthpiece should be used for every job.

Overtone Series for my Physics Classes

This is an edited video I put together as a project example for my physics classes.

I taught high school physics for 25 years and my culminating uint in my first year classes was the physics of music. The kids were to do a project of some sort, and this video package was a sample of some things they could do.

Overtone Basics

Another video on overtones.

This is a loner version of the overtones series video with power points included.

Trumpet Physics Segment One

This is part of a two part series on  trumpet acoustics.

Some of this is edited into the other videos. This is a longer version of the trumpet discussion.

Trumpet Physics Segment Two

This is the second part of a longer discussion on trumpet acoustics.

This is the second section of a longer discussion of trumpet acoustics. This is also covered in some of the earlier videos.

Timbre on Trumpet and Flugelhorn

This is a discussion about the sounds of trumpets versus flugels.

This is a short discussion about timbre on trumpets versus flugelhorns.

Beats and Multiphonics on Bass Trumpet

Beats and Multiphonics on Bass Trumpet

This is a brief discussion about how beat frequencies and multi-phonics relate to one another.

Tartini Tones on Penny Whistles

Another look at beat frequencies.

This is a little discussion about an odd phenomenon called Tartini Tones.

Playing 6 Octaves on a Trumpet

This was originally done as a joke video for my physics kids.

That having been said, you can clearly see the method I outline in the other videos here in use.

Shattering Glass with Just The Sound of a Trumpet

This was also originally done as a joke video for my physics kids.

I play one lousy note - ONE! Yet, this is my most popular video! So much for practice, eh? ;-)

Flow Studies Discussion #1

This is my first discussion on flow studies.

This was originally done in support of a text section of my older website.

Flow Studies Discussion #2

This is my second discussion on flow studies.

This was originally done in support of a text section of my older website.

Flow Studies - Gatterman

This is my third discussion on flow studies.

This was originally done in support of a text section of my older website.
