John Dorhauer - Composer, Arranger, Trumpeter

August 21, 2018

I first met John Dorhauer when I started working with the Shout Section Big Band several years ago. John was their primary trumpet soloist. He was also studying composition.

As I've gotten to know John, he has evolved into a truly unique improviser on the trumpet. His solos show an idiosyncratic character that constitute a unique voice.

John is now a teacher of composition at Elmhurst College and has been writing big band charts that are both truly different and timely. Many high school band directors are looking for charts on pop tunes and rock tunes to give the kids something to relate to. However, often they end up with charts that just sound hokey when played instrumentally. John, on the other hand, has developed a style of writing that not only covers contemporary and rock to hip hop tunes, his charts sound anything but hokey! They are truly interesting and fun to play.

If you are a K-12 to College band director, you would be well advised to check out John's music, particularly if you want some really hip contemporary charts. Here is the link to John's website.

BTW, John is also open to doing charts on commission.

Respectfully submitted,

Nick Drozdoff
